Kidney disease disability benefits are available from Social Security for claimants that have irreversible (chronic) kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality or “marker” such as protein in the urine, and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer.

There are many causes of chronic kidney disease disability. The kidneys may be affected by diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Some kidney conditions are inherited or congenital. An estimated 7.7 million adults have physiological evidence of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic renal failure usually occurs over a number of years as the internal structures of the kidney are slowly damaged. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. In fact, progression may be so slow that symptoms do not occur until kidney function is less than one-tenth of normal. Chronic renal failure and ESRD affect more than 2 out of 1,000 people in the United States. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two most common causes and account for most cases.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires a couple of different things to determine whether a claimant has chronic kidney disease disability. First, the SSA needs documentation of your kidney disease consisting of history, physical examination and laboratory evidence. Second, there has to be laboratory evidence of deteriorating kidney function.
