Diabetes Social Security Benefits

Minnesota Social Security Law Firm

Diabetes social security benefits are based on the severity of your diabetes and how complications from the disease affect your ability to function. Diabetes is linked to serious long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body. Diabetes disability often leads to blindness, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and nerve damage.

What causes diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes develops when the immune system malfunctions and attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Doctors are not sure why the immune system malfunctions, but they think heredity and the environment may play contributing roles. A hereditary predisposition to develop type 1 diabetes may increase your chances of developing diabetes. Environmental factors such as certain viruses and cold weather may contribute to the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is associated with several risk factors including:

• high blood pressure
• high blood triglyceride levels
• high-fat, low-fiber diet
• high alcohol intake
• obesity
• sedentary lifestyle (little exercise)

Other factors that play a role in developing type 2 diabetes are: older age, a family history of diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.

Diabetes complications

It is difficult to get approved for diabetes social security benefits based solely on meeting the diabetes impairment listing. You will have a much stronger case if you can provide evidence of complications caused by your diabetes or other conditions that limit your activities of daily living.

Fields Law diabetes disability attorneys will assist you in getting the medical records and supporting documentation you need to provide the SSA with evidence of your diabetes disability. If you are unable to work because of diabetes mellitus we can help you apply for social security benefits. If you have been denied disability benefits we can appeal your case.

We offer a Free case review. Our Minnesota diabetes disability attorneys understand how frustrating it is to have diabetes and be denied disability benefits when you are unable to work. There are never any fees unless we win your disability case.
